Deir ez-Zor, Syria – Al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) took over several districts in al-Bukamal city, east of Deir ez-Zor province, after clashes with rebels of Shura al-Mujahedeen Council, activists from the city of al-Bukamal told ARA News on Tuesday.

Shura al-Mujahedeen Council includes the brigades and battalions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Nusra Front) and the Islamic Front.

Fayez Abdul Aziz, civil rights activist based in the city of al-Bukamal, told ARA News that after clashes ended between the two sides, ISIL was able to take control of al-Katif neighbourhood, Hajjana barracks, Kornish Street and the central market, coinciding with other clashes in al-Sina’a area.

The pro-regime warplanes carried out several air raids on the strongholds of Shura al-Mujahideen Counci in al-Bukamall, especially al-Sina’a area and Pulman Garages in the city center, while a similar strike hit salt mine vicinity, according to local activists in the city.

“The salt mine attack resulted in the death of several civilians and the injury of many others. The injured were transferred to nearby field hospitals,” activists reported.

The local council of the city launched a distress call on Monday, due to the ongoing clashes in the city, which displaced 400 families of al-Bukamal residents towards more stable areas in the countryside.

The displacement coincided with the full cessation of the National Hospital in al-Bukamal, near the clashes area on the city’s outskirts. The wounded were transferred to field hospitals in the cities of al-Ashara and al-Mayadeen, according to a statement published online by the Local Council.
