Kobane, Syria An exhibition about Kurdish folk proverbs was held in the city of Kobane (Ain al-Arab), north of Syria, in the premise of Kobane Lawyers Assembly last week.

Many spectators interested in the Kurdish heritage and folk culture attended the exhibition.

Organized by the Hiro Assembly for Kurdish Women in Syria, the exhibition included paintings implying written proverbs in both Arabic and Kurdish languages as well as some illustrations of these proverbs.

Talking to ARA News, Mircana Jouma, member of the assembly, said: “The aim of this exhibition is to raise the awareness of the new generation regarding our ancestors’ heritage of sayings and expressions that were considered social norms.”

“Moreover, we aim to show their impact on our modern life and society’s culture as they had positive and sometimes negative influence,” she said.

According to Jouma, the new generation in the area “totally forgot about the Kurdish proverbs”.

“In other words, it was acquainted with them due to al-Baath regime’s despotic practices against Kurds that they forgot their mother language. All Kurdish culture-related activities were banned for decades,” Jouma told ARA News.
