Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – The President of Iraqi Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani, received on Wednesday Ahmed Assi al-Jarba, head of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) and his accompanying delegation in Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The two sides discussed security and political developments in the region, especially after al-Qaeda offshoot group of the Islamic State (which was previously called the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant ‘ISIL’) took control of large areas in Iraq. The latest developments in Syria’s crisis were also on top of the meeting’s agenda.

Talking to ARA News, Fawaz Mahmoud, Deputy Minister of Education in the SNC-linked Syrian Interim Government, said: “Jarba’s visit to Kurdistan carries many connotations, including the future of Iraq and the arrangements that can be made after the Kurdistan Region has become an important power to be reckoned with in terms of the balance in the region as a whole.”

“Kurdistan has an efficient role regarding the situation in Syria,” Mahmoud said.

According to Mahmoud, Jarba belongs to a large family in Iraq and Syria, which may play a big role in the arrangements for the coming phase, especially through taking advantage of the good relationship which historically connects al-Shammar clans (which al-Jarba belongs to) with the Kurds in Syria and Iraq.

Jarba’s visit is the second of its kind to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq since he was elected as president of the SNC last July, coinciding with the acceleration of events on both the Syrian and Iraqi arenas.
