Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, issued a statement saying that the area controlled by the Islamic State (IS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, in both of Syria and Iraq includes 9 million people.
The lives of 9 million civilians is at stake under IS control, according to Ki-moon.
Ki-moon disclosed in a report –submitted to the Security Council on Friday– the implementation of resolution 2139 that al-Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusra) controls the smuggling trade between Syria and Turkey, which is a major source of income to finance their operations, as the entire Syrian territory along the border with Turkey is under the control of al-Nusra, an affiliation of al-Qaeda.
“More than a thousand civilians have been killed in Syria since the beginning of August. The Syrian death toll is constantly increasing,” Ban Ki-moon emphasized.
The U.N. Secretary General expressed concerns about the growing danger of extremists in Syria, stressing this danger could prevail across the region.
