Geneva, Switzerland – Dozens of Iraqi and Syrian Kurds held a sit-in on Friday in front of the United Nations’ building in the Swiss city of Geneva, in support with the Yezidi Kurds in northern Iraq.

The protesters chanted slogans condemning “atrocities” by militants of the Islamic State (IS) against Yezidis in Shingal area, north of Iraq, where dozens of Yezidi Kurds were slaughtered while thousands others escaped their homes and resorted to the nearby Sinjar mount, to suffer sharp shortage of basic supplies.

Organized by the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iraq and its Syrian branch, the sit-in was aimed to deliver a massage to the international community about the suffering of the Yezidi minority in Iraq, and show support to the Kurdistan’s Peshmerga army in its war against IS extremists.

The stay-in was  commenced with a minute of silence to pay respect “for those who sacrificed themselves for their land”.

Many slogans praising Peshmerga and the Popular Protection Units (YPG) as well as the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) were raised during the sit-in.

The participants also called for a Kurdish unity in the face of the “terrorists” in both Iraq and Syria.

The flags of Iraqi Kurdistan and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were present in place where some members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iraq delivered several speeches.

“IS-led terrorism in shingal targets all Kurdish people in the four parts of Kurdistan (Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iraq),” said Saleh Saglem, head of the People’s Council of North Kurdistan (Turkey’s Kurdish region) during the sit-in of Geneva.

“All sides must be committed to their national duties in defending the Kurdish people,” Saglem added.

Hence, Saglam pointed out the importance of Peshmerga-YPG collaboration against IS, saying: “We hope Kurds will be committed to the revolution.”

“Terrorist groups cannot achieve triumph facing the bravery of the Kurdish forces,” he said.

The Islamic State has recently controlled areas in Shingal and other Peshmerga-held areas in northern Iraq, where the latter is counter-fighting supported by Syrian Kurdish forces of the YPG to regain these areas.
