Al-Hasakah, Syria – The Syrian government said on Monday that the United States should involve Damascus in any decision related to possible operation against Sunni insurgents in Syria.

The Syrian regime’s message was delivered by Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem who stated in a press conference in Damascus on Monday that his government is willing to cooperate with any western powers against militants of the Islamic State in Syria.

The Syrian FM emphasized the willingness of the Assad regime to collaborate with the West in this regard, saying that the Damascus government has always fought terrorism.

The stance of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad comes one day after the White House announced considering possible action against IS strongholds in Syria, similar to the ongoing military operations in neighbouring Iraq.

Al-Muallem said that the air strikes alone will not be adequate to deal with IS group –which gained control of vast areas of Syrian and Iraqi land during the last few months– emphasizing the need for participation of intelligence agencies in the neighbouring countries “to track movements of IS militants and how they enter the Syrian territory”.

Al-Muallem stressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with the United States, Britain and all international and regional powers and all efforts aimed at combating terrorism.

“The Syrian government is the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, thus any action taken on the Syrian land should be discussed with the government’s officials, and we confirm our full willingness to participate in such anti-terrorism operations,” he said.

During his press conference, al-Muallem also condemned the beheading of the American journalist James Foley by IS extremists.

Meanwhile, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, condemned on Monday what she described widespread horrific crimes committed by the Islamic State group in Iraq, including murder, slavery and sexual crimes targeting people for ethnic or religious affiliations.

Pillay said that the IS killed on the 10th of last June up to 670 prisoners at Badush detention in the city of Mosul, after transferring them into free zones. Pillay emphasized that deliberate and systematic murder against civilians on the basis of their religious affiliation account as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
