Kobane, Syria – The Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) were able to prevent the advance of the Islamic State’s (IS/ISIS) militant fighters near the Syrian city of Kobane at the Turkish border on Monday.
According to local sources, at least 45 IS militants were killed on Monday during clashes with the YPG forces in Kobane suburbs.
More than 60 Kurdish villages in Kobane’s environs were controlled by IS during the last few days, in an attempt by the Sunni militants to take over a major Kurdish city after 6 months of siege.
Approximately 100 thousand residents of Kobane crossed the border into Turkey looking for safe haven, after fears of IS controlling the city.
Speaking to the AP, , Nawaf Khalil, the spokesman of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) –political leadership of the YPG– said that the situation on the ground is better than before.
Khalil emphasized that the Kurdish forces of the YPG were able to defeat IS in the eastern countryside of Kobane, forcing the militants to withdraw from some of the recently controlled areas.
