URFA – Leader of the al-Qaeda wing in Syria (Nusra Front) vowed on Friday that his group will continue its military operations despite the ceasefire that has been reached between Syrian rebel factions and pro-Assad troops.
Abu Muhammad al-Joulani, Qaeda leader in Syria, said in a new recording released on Friday that Nusra fighters and their allies refuse to hold any truce with the Syrian regime’s forces under any conditions.
Al-Joulani considered the two-week ceasefire –that has been reached under the sponsorship of the United Nations– as a western conspiracy against the Syrian people.
“This ceasefire agreement is a mere western conspiracy aimed at breaking down the will of the Syrian people and save the Assad regime,” he said.
Regarding the Syria peace talks in Geneva, al-Joulani said: “The actual negotiations take place on the battlefield.”
“The peace plan proposed by (the U.N. envoy to Syria) Staffan de Mistura serves the tyrant Assad regime,” Syria’s leader of al-Qaeda said. “A real revolution means overthrowing the regime and its institutions, not to negotiate about the future of the dictator. Otherwise, the bloodshed of thousands of innocent people would go in vain.”
Al-Joulani concluded his statement by calling on all rebel factions in Syria to refuse the truce and continue the fight “until defeating Assad and his militias”.
Noteworthy, some 97 rebel factions fighting in Syria have agreed to join a two-week ceasefire with pro-Assad troops starting on Friday midnight. The ceasefire was approved after a U.S.-Russia agreement and is expected to be implemented under the supervision of the United Nations.
